Chapter 1: Earth and Fire

After the first purge had all but destroyed the Osuhime clan, there had only been a handful of survivors left. The few fractured families had taken to living in exile near the land of borders of the land of fire. In isolation, the few families were able to continue living mostly as they had, though far removed from their volcanic homeland. The unfortunate devastation so often wrought by their clan’s natural element had seen good reason to shun them. Even in their culled state, the clan still caused the occasional disaster.

It was mostly natural for the Osuhime to cause disasters, and the clan was well adapted for reducing their impact. They had developed jutsu to also tame and cool their own lava, but on occasion the landscape could still be ravaged by a single clan member loosing control of their anger. Such was the case, and the eventual down fall of the family. Amongst a number of only some 30 people, adults and children included, there came to be born something of a prophet, of their god of lava.

Korin Osuhime was born to a happily married couple of well talented ninjutsu users. They were not exactly the village leaders, but among the council of the eldest, they were still respected and regarded with great esteem. Why their child had been born with such powers was a mystery to them, but one they discovered very quickly. Korin, as they called their new daughter, was an emotional child, and prone to bouts of crying, and complaint.

The child radiated heat from her core warmer than any of the others of her clan had imagined possible, even enough to agitate some of even her hot bodied family. The chakra she held was immense, and intense, burning outside of her as others took note. Few complained at the display of inner heat, because such a thing is revered by the Osuhime. Each and ever clan member holds a body temperature at least 10 degrees above average, and only get hotter when their emotional fire is stoked. The long and interesting history of the Osuhime clan was filled with all manner of idiosyncrasy, and odd quirk; but knowledge of the clan’s immediate future is more important than it’s forgotten past.

When the new prophet of Lava had been born, the fate of their nation was sealed. The family didn’t even have time to realize the consequences before their world was torn to pieces. Only seven months old, young Korin was able to conjure forth immense and surprising power. During an especially powerful storm of rain and lightning, the child had grown so frightened, that her emotional flames built up to an unthinkable level. The world itself began to shake beneath her fear, as the storm tore apart trees and buildings in her small village.

The chakra that developed is something natural of their clan, an aura around the infant that could be seen in its shimmering heat. The intensity began to cause her aura to glow brighter and brighter, and become thick with huge amounts of burning hot chakra. Approaching the baby became quickly impossible, even by her heat resistant family, but some still tried. Some were burned, while others did their best to contain the growing power, but it was to no avail.

It only took a half an hour for the pressure to build too much, and the landscape began to tear apart. The lava chakra the baby had gathered all but exploded when it built up beyond her physical ability to contain. The blast leveled the small mud brick house she was born in, and those in the closest area died in an instant. Thick streams of boiling hot lava exploded out the walls and flooded into the surrounding village. Those not killed in the initial blast were quickly overwhelmed by the onrushing waves of flowing molten stone.

The devastation of her people was quick, but continued for hours after the last person around had died. Even after the infant was left floating in lava of its own creation, the horrible gouts of flame and earth continued. The heat battled against the storm, and large cracks in the world began to spit streams of molten rock skywards. Everything around the small village began to burn and smolder, but soon became blanketed by a thick layer of quickly cooling lava. After the storm had finally passed, all that remained was a relatively smooth field of rough pumice. Of course, such levels of destruction had not gone unnoticed.

Chapter 2: Burnt Embers

Even after the storm had passed; the infant had remained behind in her ravaged landscape. She was fortunate to have lived near a well hidden temple to learning and study. The unnatural rain of fire that had mixed with the falling storm had caught the attention of the nature attuned monks near by.

Those from the Open Lotus Monastery were the first to happen across the young child, still lying in the crater she’d made the night before. The monks were a wise sort which rarely reacted with anything but wonder to the odd happenings that struck the world around them. Being of the caring sort, the four monks that had found her willingly brought the lone orphan back to their temple for protection.

It was an odd coincidence that had delivered the young prophet into such hands. The monks of the Open Lotus were studious and pious, leading lives of poverty, hunger, and study. Almost every member of a monastery is an orphan, or at least abandoned by their parents. Like most monasteries, the Open Lotus was a center of intense learning. They toiled through every hour of daylight copying dusty, ancient tomes, and pondering the meaning of each word they came across. Star study, anatomy, and most importantly the workings of the natural world enthralled the monks as easily as a genjutsu might trap a fresh academy student. The family produced some of the finest manuscripts in the land, and traded them to wealthy scholars for rice, water, and bread.

As all monks who seek to perfect their minds, also work to perfect their body. Though none of them were ninja, the monks of the Monastery still understood the workings of chakra, and the body. Practicing a mobile form of meditation know as Tai Chi, the monks consciously move the chakra in their body. They concentrate it, and slosh it through out their bodies like wine in a glass bottle. By pushing chakra from a balanced center, the monks could do amazing things most humans would find impossible. Oddly, all of this martial practice was rarely ever put to anything except practice, though it did help them perfect their physical forms.

With the new baby being brought back to their well hidden keep, Korin too would be forced to endure their lifestyle as well. Thankfully, it was likely only these monks who would have been able to help her. When they first found her, Korin was burning with a dreadful fever. Of course, the intense heat they felt was nothing abnormal for the baby, however it was the first the monks had ever seen of such things. Being wise scholars, much of the monastery set to work to in understanding her kekkei genkai.

Only after the first few nights the monks had begun to associate the increased tremors rippling in the earth all around the college. The babies growing confusion and anxiety continued to cause rips in stone, and the fluctuating heat became an obvious problem. Least they face annihilation; the monks had only two quick choices to make. Ignoring the choice of destroying the young infant, the monks set about the course of the second and brought out their coveted scrolls of ancient and secret knowledge. Inside of their library they found powerful seals that could contain almost any amount of chakra, and set forth to imprint the needed text on the girl.

The seal they placed on her back was a powerful one, and took several monks several hours to finish. During the procedure, two had passed out from the great heat coming off of the baby, but none were badly injured. In the end the fine lines of script they scribed glowed with a hot, white light. The words moved and the ink sunk into her body, seeking out and sealing around her chakra network. As the seal set root inside her, it stemmed off and formed into a small flower, located between her shoulder blades. The seal fed off the intense chakra inside her, and from that day forth would slowly begin to grow.

The Open Lotus was an old monastery, and in it’s vaults sat a bounty of well protected information. Among the most treasured was their great wall of seals. Every fuuinjutsu seal that had ever passed through the hands of the century old scriptorium had been copied and secreted away, often times never allowed to leave the walls of their monastery. The school became so obsessed with keeping the knowledge of their seals a secret, that they formed a unique way to encrypt each seal. By channeling chakra into a second outline seal, the first seal can be contained in a tattoo, designed to take the appearance of anything the artist wishes. The monks of the Open Lotus Monastery are known for their numerous, often time full body, tattoos. The tattoos seem little more than art to most people, however those who are able to see chakra can see how they flow into, and mingle with the body and chakra of the person wearing it. The oldest monks are often covered head to toe with too many tattoos to count, and can show almost transcendent physical abilities.

They’re known for sleeping on nails, balancing on the point of swords, or allowing strong pieces of wood to be broken over their heads and shoulders. While they often display their physical abilities to interested crowds, attacks on the Open Lotus were extremely rare. All knowledge they allowed to be known publicly was typically sold at a reasonably expensive price, so few had need to steal. Life in the monastery was certainly more mercantile, than combative.

Chapter 3: Blossoming

When she had arrived at the monastery, the infant had no discernable name. She was hardly young enough to be aware, let alone learn something so simple as her name. Her young brain had barely begun to make general associations like up or down, or sky, or mother, before her world was so quickly changed. With the application of the lotus tattoo on her back, her temperature had been placed under control, and she calmed greatly. Even with the seal in place, however, her body still burnt hotter than the all the other monks around her.

The many monks tended to her as she grew, teaching her her first words, and leading her through her first steps. They named her Coal for the way she smoldered, and all grew fond of the girl. She showed a slight fear for thunderstorms, but grew to get over such fears in time. Most importantly of all, the child displayed no further manifestation of her destructive molten abilities. Like any other child delivered to the place, the Open Lotus put the girl to work, and taught her how to clean. After she had mastered walking, talking, and counting, she was quickly put to work with other children, sweeping away the dust and litter rampant in the various buildings. She swept the vast floors of the meditation chamber, often times in solitude. She scrubbed dried ink off of the writing tables by night, though usually with help. After she grew old enough she began to practice the same tai chi the rest of the monks did, and was able to join in on morning exercises.

At the age of six they began to teach her how to read and write. The schools had an exacting and demanding outlook on penmanship, and were happy with nothing less than masterful calligraphy. Because Fuuinjutsu is so difficult, even experienced monks strive to have perfect control over the strokes of their quill. As she learned to read and write, she soon fell into the patterns of the monks, and began to learn. Education was something of a requirement, or perhaps a byproduct of their lives. So many books pass before the eyes of every monk, that if only 1% is retained, the scholar could scribe a library of even that knowledge.

By the time she was ten years old, young student Coal had an extensive vocabulary, and was openly intelligent, sharp, and cunning. She had a good memory, and could remember facts from documents easily enough. She picked up naturally on organizational skills, and became a well adjusted and happy child. Of course, she had no memories of the destruction her family had been put through, and really she was much better off for this fact. To her, her life seemed completely natural. She was just an orphan student, who would soon grow into a scholar, and scroll writer.

Perhaps the only thing that separated her from the other students around her was the tattoo on her back. The single lotus bud that had been placed to capture and harness the chakra constantly bubbling up inside her had grown. The chakra bleeding into it had caused its stem to reach down along her back in a slow and snaking spiral. Some of its petals had begun to open, but it still maintained all of its integrity. No other student had been given a tattoo, because most were considered too young. Of course, no other student had needed such a tattoo.

The tattoo on her back was still capturing the vast majority of Chakra flowing through her body. With each passing day the seal the monks had placed on her had grown by tiny amounts. Inside the seal, the chakra was being contained and absorbed, constantly increasing both the length of the stem and the fullness of the lotus blossom. By the time Coal was 13 the flower had established a full bud, however its petals were still closed.

Chapter 4: Dark Tidings

While Coal’s childhood was ideal for an orphan like her, though no life is permitted to pass through this world without its share of strife. It was just after Coal’s13th birthday that talk of war began to overtake the land of fire. While outright Village warfar had been avoided, Ninjas from the land of mist had made several moves against the Land of Fire. The Mizukage made claims that it was Rogue ninjas working without orders from the village; however few believed such a weak story.

While the Land of Fire was well defended by mighty Konohagakure, Coal didn’t live in a village. The temple of knowledge known as the Open Lotus Monastery was a small library that was simply over flowing with forbidden lore and unknown power. This allure of such knowledge drew the Mist ninjas in to attack, and soon Coal’s monastery became to sole focus of the attack. The hidden away knowledge contained in the monastery’s vault. The knowledge contained therein could have made any nation an outstanding powerhouse amongst the more ignorant nations around them. It was for that very reason that the wise monks had locked such information away.

While the monks of the monastery were not exactly ninjas, they were also not offensive. They had a physical fighting style that demonstrated well their grace and power, and more knowledge of Fuuinjutsu than most villages, but this did not make them prepared for battle. By using their secret lore, the Monks were able to fend off the first assault of the ninjas. Durring the first assault, seven monks lost their lives against a group of three Kiri ninjas. In only the first fifteen seconds of the surprise assault, the class practicing their meditations in the courtyard was decimated.

It was almost five minutes before the eldest monks present were able to fend off the invading trio. While the younger students, and even some of the older professors had enough innate talent to protect themselves, and hold the shinobi at bay, the eldest monks were a power unto themselves. The host of many forbidden jutsu, and covered from head to toe with tattoos of immense power, they were able to repel the attackers in time.

In all, the monks were unable to kill even one of the attacking shinobi, but they did manage to drive them off. Only two days later an envoy from the Hidden Leaf Village arrived at the monastery to offer a warning of the previous attack. The monks had already disposed of their dead, however the simple fact that their knowledge was now threatened weighed more heavily on their hearts than the loss of their friends. Never before had any force managed to score such a victory against the monks, but they’d rarely had to deal with outright war.

Though the Leaf ninjas had been to late to issue the first warning, the rest of their decree fell on keen ears. Information had come in that over a dozen Mist ninjas had managed to breach the borders of the Land of Fire. While damage to the outlying villages in the land had been minimal, great conflict was expected on the horizon. The shinobi of the Leaf village offered up protective services, and from that first agreement stemmed a long and lucrative alliance.

The Leaf Village officials that had arrived forged a strong alliance with the Lotus monks, and soon a free exchange began. Of course, this was not to come to pass until peace once more had been established in and around the temple of knowledge. Because the monastery contained within it so much stored knowledge, the leaf village was compelled to do all it could to protect the village, in exchange for certain benefits.

Chapter 5: Fog of War

The support from the leaf village did not arrive a moment too late. The shinobi of the hidden mist village had wasted little time doubling their efforts. After having been rebuffed once, the captain of the invading force moved to enact a final siege against the temple. With a force of 6 ninjas he hoped it would be no trouble, but the monks were now better prepared for assault.

Only five days after the first attack, the second attack struck. The monks in the monastery were on alert, but it wouldn’t much help them against the brutal efficiency of the mist ninja’s assault left them all helpless. Over the coarse of two minutes a thick haze of cold mist floated in on a gentle breeze. The fog was so thick that it reduced visibility to mere inches. Though the monks were cool and level headed, faced with stark white blindness, many of them paniced.

Cries of fear soon began to ring out through the guards, each monk in turn shouting questions into the mist. None could see the others, and as they stumbled around in the haze, cries of alarm turned to cries of pain. As quietly as a mouse two of the expert kiri slayers moved through the mist, and took lives with their swords. With each stroke of their blades the monks of Lotus Monastery began to fall.

The Lead ninjas were quick to respond. One of their number summoned forth a pair of black hounds. The dogs had eyes that blazed with fire, and noses keen enough to track through the haze. Like before, in only the first few minutes of the assault, 12 monks lay dead at their posts. Unlike the previous encounter, however, there would be no fleeing from this fight. Though the dogs could smell through the heavy fog, they were more purposed towards directly removing it. The dogs sought out the Kiri slayers that were stalking in the mist, and attempted to destroy them.

The hounds both breathed forth great gouts of flame, waves of fire that were meant to engulf and incinerate the assaulting shinobi, however simple flames were easy for the experienced ninjas to avoid. As the flames shot through the area, however, the mist burnt off and created vast clearings in the haze. Though the mist was quick to replenish the large tear in its fog, each new blast of fire cause the mist to grow less and less hazey. Once the other ninjas could see, they too joined the fight.

The monks and the Leaf ninjas fought together against the Kiri force, and through numbers alone could have been able to over power the Kiri ninja. The fact that the elder monks and the Leaf ninjas were fine warriors only added insult to injury. When the siege had first started, some of the younger students had been gathered in the keeps four watch towers. The formed the seals for a strong barrier, and then began to focus their chakra into it. An invisible force barrier was established around the monastery, and it trapped the monks within.

Within all the fighting, many of the younger monks were getting their first taste of combat. Some had no desire to fight, but others, like young Coal, had wished to apply their particular taijutsu to the test. Saddly, Coal found herself lacking when it came to fighting, and she was very easily exhausted. The great seal the monks had placed on her chakra supply had all but crippled her when it came to utilizing her chakra.

Though she had a limited chakra supply, Coal was cunning, and capable. During her studies she had discovered she had discovered a number of inscriptions that were capable of forming great seals. The seals could be used to lock anything from doors to boxes to swords in their scabbards with a nearly unbreakable strip of paper. Though the monks made great use of them in locking safes and doors, Coal was one of the first to use the offensively.

After focusing enough of her chakra into the paper to activate the fuuinjutsu inscription, she could use the strip of paper like a piece of strong duct tape. The first time she did this she managed to secure one of the Kiri ninja’s feet to the ground, and immobilize them. After she’d done that, the rest of her allies were able to easily dispatch the helpless Kiri ninja. She managed this trick twice in the fight, which helped to greatly reduce the effectiveness of the Kiri force.

Exhausted from her battle, she retreated and allowed the others to handle the rest. In short order the trapped kiri ninjas were soon destroyed. One tried to hide, but the ninja hounds tracked him down and devoured him. The Kiri assault was completely broken, and the whole battle only took about an hour. The monks were overjoyed with their victory, though it was not an easy won victory. None of the leaf ninja died, however a full twenty monks had been injured through out the fight. Coal herself had received only minor injuries, but was still treated by the Lead medics.

Chapter 6: Konoha Alliance

After the war, a great deal of knowledge was exchanged. To protect the knowledge they had amassed from falling into evil hands, the monks took it upon themselves to donate a large number of sealed scrolls to Konoha. They were given freely, only with a warning to keep them secret. Among them were some of the more powerful seals the library had amassed during it’s lengthy time served copying texts.

Some of the Leaf ninjas began to come more frequently to the monastery, and in appreciation of the village’s protection they were granted easy access to the myriad of fuuinjutsu seals stored in the vaults. The monks were a passive and pleasant sort, so they made easy friends and good teachers to the Leaf shinobi. Likewise, some of the more firebrand monks that had grown up confined in within the walls of the monastery began to voyage to the Leaf village for training in the ninja Academy.

Though Coal had shown a great desire to leave the monastery, she had at first shown absolutely no ability to practice any sort of jutsu. Even activating only a few simple fuuinjutsu seals left her charka supply seemingly exhausted. The elder monks had been ill at ease with telling Coal of her troubled past, so had kept the full purpose of the seal mostly a secret from the girl. Her otherwise uncontrollable chakra, if unleashes, could very well have once more enflamed with Coal’s emotions, and been released in an apocalypse of crashing earth, and blazing fires.

As Coal spent time in Konoha, she grew to love the city. The vast population and sprawling number of different buildings made it something completely different from the sheltered life she’d previously led. Though she was growing up as a pious monk, she could resist the allure of so many different people. When she learned she was able to join the ninja academy, Coal made it her largest goal to achieve.

Only because Coal showed such dedication and desire to become a ninja that could protect others from assault did the elder monks of the Lotus Monastery even consider altering the seal they had applied on her as an infant. After much discussion it was agreed upon by most of the elders that because Coal had grown up and gained control of her emotions, there was less danger of imminent apocalypse.

In the end they drew Coal away from her peers, and explained to her the purpose of the seal she was wearing. They did not tell her of her lava charged chakra, nor of the loss of her clan, only that she had a remarkable supply of chakra inside of her. She had so much chakra that she would likely have destroyed herself if the seal had not been applied in time. Since then, the seal has constantly sapped and siphoned off most of her chakra, and stored it in the growing lotus blossom on her back.

They gave to her the scroll that contained the Chakra Capture Containment Seal, and told her to scribe a copy of it. Copying the manuscript took Coal about a week to complete, and when she was done she fully understood the words there in. The growing size of her lotus tattoo was symbolic of the huge amount of energy it has already stored. She learned how it drew chakra out of her, and converted it into fine lines of fuuinjutsu script. The lines were curved and woven together, as so fine that the overall image of the seal appeared as a Lotus tattoo.

Chapter 7: Remarkable Growth

After learning the function of the seal, her elder instructors offered to loosen the seal for her, and allow more chakra to flood into her network. Of course, Coal agreed eagerly. The ceremony to apply an alteration to her seal began a week later, when she was brought to the one of the temples in the monastery. There, on one of the altars to knowledge, three monks bound a powerful inscription over the base of the budding flower. The ring of text wound tightly around the bottom of the bud, and then eventually merged with the text.

The whole seal began to glow white hot afterwards, and Coal hissed with pain. The chakra in the flower was forced more to the surface and the entire tattoo began to shift. The petals of the flower slowly spread open, and exposed the round center of the lotus. The seal fixed itself back into place after it was open, and immediately coal felt a new rush of chakra. She would not be the only one to feel it, everyone around would feel the effects of her new empowerment.

True to her name, Coal’s body increased in temperature immediately. As more of the hot chakra coarsed through her network, more so her physical temperature increased. Within an hour coal was a blazing 104 degrees, and starving. It wasn’t a surprise she’d be so hungry. Denied the drawbacks of her clan for life up till now, this restrained manifestation of her chakra’s Lava nature still left her body burning extra hot. She consumed calories much faster than anyone else, and had to keep up.

Because the Chakra Capture Seal was still in place, Coal still did not have access to nearly the full supply of her chakra. Her chakra was so immense that even capping it was difficult. While previously the tattoo harvested a full 90% of the girl’s chakra, that was reduced drastically. The tattoo was altered to only capture about 75% of the chakra she generated, and seal it into the ink. With access to only 25% of her full chakra supply, Coal’s abilities changed almost over night.

So vast was her chakra that only 25% of it was almost as much as the others her age had. Though she could keep up easily enough now, she was still typically the first to tire out. When she finally joined the ninja academy, this fact did not win her much praise with her peers. Coal was almost 14 when she joined the academy, and possibly the oldest of her graduating year.

Coming from a long line of talented ninjutsu users did not hurt, and she learned the basics as quickly as the other bright students. After little practice she could walk on water, walls, or ceilings. She received a full and standard instruction in the ways of Konoha ninja, and she always maintained excellent grades on her tests. It did not take long for academy officials to realize that she made up for her apparent lack of combat prowess, with great wisdom and knowledge. They soon drew her out of the normal classes and transferred her to the medical academy.

As it turned out, the medical school was like a second calling to her. She picked up on the processes of life as readily as she had the detailed scripts for fuuinjutsu seals. Her sharp mind and keen memory greatly assisted her in learning anatomy, botany, biology, and other more obscure sciences. She was taught the methods of internal surgery, dissection, embalming, and poisoning. She flourished in the medical school, and in short order she graduated with honors.

Chapter 8: True Calling

After she was given her headband she triumphantly joined the ranks of the proud and brave genins of the Leaf Village. Though she did not go on as many missions as most of the others did, she spent much of her time in the hospital. Because she showed such potential for healing, she was kept quite busy tending to the sick and injured citizens and shinobi of Konoha. Coal excelled at her job, and she took it very seriously. As she was growing up, Coal had lead a very studious life, and even up until 14 she remained rather stiff and formal.

She was known as a bookworm, and almost all of her time was spent studying some form of trivia or another. She could almost always be found in the Konoha public library, to the point where she actually picked up a second job as a worker there. Each night she helped replace the scrolls and books that had been used that day, and spend a little bit of time reading as she did. Some of her peers thought it was a little strange that she never tended to go outside, or have any fun.

Coal did not let it get to her, and in time others learned to respect her great intellect, in spite of her odd habits. With so much time spent practicing and working, she earned enough prestige for herself to be hired on as a full time doctor at the hospital. No more would she simply tend to the minor cuts and illness. She could, hence forth, assist and perform operations. She could really save lives in vivid and drastic ways. She would be taught the full array of medical jutsu, and achieve a new rank for herself.

She graduated to chuunin at 16 years old, and began her advanced studies. Her employment as a doctor in the hospital brought her both admiration, and a hefty paycheck. She patched major wounds, and saved numerous lives. While doing so she gained a huge amount of love for her job, in spite of the more tragic sides of hospital work. Each time she healed a wound she was further inspired to stay her path and work to master the healing arts.

She spent the next three years as a chuunin, mastering medical jutsu, as she maintained her life long study of Fuuijutsu. By this time copies of almost every scroll in the Lotus monastery could be found in the Konoha library and she maintained her studies on campus there. Though her popularity was steadily increasing, she was still aloof and bookish. She was a wallflower in the crowded city, and just sort of blended in to the background. It was not common for the first time meeting Coal to be in a room in the hospital.

Chapter 9: Ablaze in the Land of Fire

Though she was a wall flower, Coal did not truly fit in amongst the every day citizens of Konoha. She had grown up in a monestary, where games were often just a ball and a broom. She swept more than she played, and studied more than she swept. The few places anyone ever found her where places she worked, or ate. One of the few places she found time for socialize was at one of the dozens of resturants that dotted the landscape of Konoha.

Like many students, Coal loved the inexpensive and tastey Raman noodles that could be purchased from any number of small stands. She could be commonly found there eating her fill on spicey noodles, with roasted pork, or chicken. Having grown up on a diet of rice and water, she savored the intense spices. Many paused to comment on the sheer amount of food the girl could put away, and they were not exaggerating her powers. In one night she could easily eat five or six bowls of soup, and an entire loaf of bread. More amazingly was the slim and waifish figure she somehow maintained. Her figure was something others were to comment on as well.

Everyone knew that coal was hot. Those who had been in her general area could feel the subtle heat that radiated from her when she was at rest. Even the oblivious had a hard time not noticing when she was excited, happy, or in a very good mood. Only those that had been with her in the field had seen her intense aura at its worst, when she is enraged. In spite of her off body temperature, Coal became quite popular.

She was gifted enough in conversation to be amusing, and had a dry but clever sense of humor. She sometimes spoke over people’s heads, but everyone knew her to be nice. The fact that she had developed into an attractive young woman did not hurt either. When she was at work and had her hair up, and glasses on, others knew her to be one of the most attractive doctors of her day. She had a flawless figure, and a sharp mind to match it. In her late teens she became popular with the boys in town, and did not mind the extra attention one bit.

Indeed, as she grew up she found out more and more than she had a great love for socializing. Being around others she could speak with, esspecialy others who were as bright as her, trilled her to no end. She held a huge interest in almost every topic people could come up with, and expressed unique opinions that made as much sense as they were ironic. Coal was wise, charming, and though she was desired by many, none ever won her heart.

Passion was something Coal was often the victim of, but she knew better than to get herself too heavily involved with others. She learned how to keep her distance, and cool the advances of others with subtle grace and charm. She became known as something of a tease, but she was friendly enough to begin to attract attention of those around her. Once she came out of her shell and began to make friends, young Lady Coal was well on her way to forging her own lasting legacy.

Chapter 10: Jounin

As her popularity grew and respect for her prowess expanded, she was given the chance to take an exam to advance to jounin. It was not going to be a simple task, and she was given little time to prepare. A woman was brought to the hospital with a grave injury. The woman had been deployed on a mission in the Snow country, and stepped into a trap. She was grievously poisoned by the trap, and her leg had been torn open with numerous small blades. When the injured chuunin had arrived at the hospital she was already on death’s door. Her breathing was feint and almost not existent, as was her pulse. Her skin was pale and her eyes sunken, and her fingertips and lips were beginning to turn blue.

The poison was vile and insidious, more of a venom than anything else. The blades had been coated with a thick cocktail of biological enzymes that ate flesh, destroyed nerves, and paralyzed the nervous system. It was slow acting, but resulted in total body shut down. It was not a pretty picture, but Coal knew what she had to do. Recalling days from her past she rushed out of the hospital. As quickly as she could she sought out a book with seals useful in building construction. It was a rarely used seal these days, but one that was handy enough for this.

Because the vemon had proven incurable by standard practices and jutsu, she relied on a different sort of medicine. She scrolled through the numerous seals and instructions as quickly as she was able, then called for a brush, and some ink. The nurses around her acquiesced and retrieved the desired items. Once Coal had found the proper seal, she set to work scribing it on the woman’s body. After the seal was in place she took a small step back, and then formed a single hand seal. She pressed two fingers against the seal and it lit up with power.

While the seal’s first use was to pull out anything from nails and bolts in a wall, to stumps and stones in the ground, she used it for a different purpose. When the seal was activated it selected the venom in the woman’s body, and began to draw it towards the seal. In a matter of minutes the toxin was pulled up through her blood, and concentrated in her heart. It flooded up through her bone and flesh, then eventually skin. A floating orb of venom, only about one inch in diameter, squeezed its way out of the fuuinjutsu seal, then splashed down harmlessly on her skin.

Moments later the woman was gasping for great and gripping her chest. With the venom removed she made an immediate recovery, and had only an injured ankle to worry about. As an after thought Coal easily set the bone, and then forced her chakra into her ankle to mend the wound fully. After the full procedure the woman had little more than a limp, and another life had been saved for Konoha. The officers in charge did not fail to notice, and she was given an exam to access her suitability as an elite.

Like her genin test, and every test at the academy, Coal passed this test her first time, and was overjoyed. Shortly after her 18th birthday she went out to celebrate, and nearly brought down the house. Enthralled with her amazing achievement, she relished her life. She tasted among her first sips of alcohol, and got a little carried away. While she was dancing and partying, she heated up to levels she hadn’t experienced since her early childhood. She put no one in any real danger, but several people around her in the nightclub she had visited had feinted, or come very close to doing so. The air around her radiated heat once more, and everyone could see for themselves the full shimmering aspect of her heated inner core.

While some people viewed that as strange enough to warrant exclusion, just as many got over the display. Coal herself was only further intrigued by the matter, and took a long vacation to celebrate her promotion, and learn more about herself. She’d gone her entire childhood without caring to question, but at last she was growing interested.

Chapter 11: Cooling Flames

After she received her promotion she also received her first real mission in the field. Though she had practiced combat medicine while on the defensive in Konoha, she was for the first time sent abroad to assist in invasive military efforts. There she proved herself invaluable, both defeating enemies on her own, and restoring Leaf Village forces enough to be able to fight for them. Her fellow ninjas discovered that quiet and reserved Coal was also a superb combatant.

Her unique blend of martial style and disabling medical techniques made her ideal for crippling difficult enemies, leaving them helpless for other ninjas to destroy. Using paralyzing and poisoning jutsu she could weave disabling chaos through an enemy ninja squad, making them easy pickings for her friends. Most discovered she was low on chakra most of the time, but thought nothing of it. She used a lot of jutsu when she healed and tended to always be healing someone that was injured.

The legends of Lady Coal, and even all the rest of the Konoha ninja in that war were legendary, and the stuff of a whole other book. Suffice it to say that in the end, six years passed and a hard fought victory was won. A despot in a minor nation was disposed, and thousands of natives in that land were gifted with freedom once more. It’d been six long years of fighting and watching their backs, but the Konoha ninja force was finally able to return home.

A long span of peace and prosperity flourished in the Land of Fire after the war was over. There was still a fair share of military engagement, but for the most part they were just minor altercations. They resulted in only the normal flow of drama and wounded in and out of the village. The higher ranking ninjas were permitted to relax as mortal, or world wide, threats as vanished for a time. Lady Coal was thrilled to have the time off, and in spite of her growing popularity she returned to the monotonous task of organizing and cataloging the ever increasing number of scrolls in Konoha’s library.

Durring this great time of relative peace, Coal found herself able to set aside her healers role. She focused on the gaining of understanding, and the safeguarding of dangerous jutsu. Coal excelled as an archivist the entire time she’d been working at the library, and over and over she refused offers of promotions to other tasks. Coal had grown up copying and cataloging texts, so this work was both second nature, and her favorite hobby.

In time, though, the officials of Konoha did offer her a position in the library she had wanted for some time. She was already doing much of the work in the library, and it was widely known among the staff that none knew the pile of scrolls better than she did, so it was only logical they gave her the rightful position. Lady Coal was made Master Archivist of the Konoha Library, and relished in her new title. Her job didn’t change much there after she was promoted, because she’d already been running the place for a year.

Even to the current day Lady Coal still maintains her post as Master Archivist. She has also since returned to work at the hospital, but only as a part time surgeon. She’s on call when needed, but most of her passion lies in rediscovering lost lore for the benefit of Konoha. She’s already discovered numerous powerful jutsu, so only time will tell what her progress will bring.

Sitting at last Coal can not help but exhale an exaggerated sigh of relief. The day had been so long, but at least the sun was finally setting. With the weekend ahead of her she had a few days to actually spend to herself. A long bath tonight and a day in the sun tomorrow would do well towards recharging her batteries. Just imagining the prospect of sinking into a pool of hot water was enough to make her sink in her own seat. She slouches just slightly and crosses her legs, finally raising one of her arms and speaking. “Waitor! A glass of red wine.” She calls out, then motions to her own table.

The staff was used to her particular manners, and knew she meant no harm. Coal was a good tipper, so she was a good friend of the people who brought her the drinks that she ordered. The Fireseed Pub had been her favorite dive if only for its name. The fact that the bar was also quieter and more secluded helped as well. Coal could commonly be found here after the work day was over, when she just wanted to relax. All the workers and regulars knew her well, and she was very popular. As she waits for her wine, she stretches out in her comfortable booth.

Her feet slide out just slightly as she leans back, sighing once more. Her deep black eyes roll closed for a moment, and she wiggles her small toes. As always, she is barefoot. Even when she works she wears no shoes, but to do so on her off time is unthinkable. The common red robes she wear are as famous as she is, and they cling to her body perfectly. In the smokey haze of the dimly lit bar, many people are sure to get a peek at her as she lounges in her corner. In short time she is given her wine, and her night is almost complete.

The first sip of wine after a night of work was one of those simple delights that gave Coal the utmost of pleasure. As she sips and swallows the cool alcohol, a shiver of heat ripples through her form. She smiles much brighter, and opens her eyes again. Konoha really was the perfect place to live. In time others would join her in the bar, and in spite of how tired she was, she’d be here until well into the morning. Friends and good times were easy to find, when you know just where to look for them all.

Description: Coal was born with an unthinkably large chakra supply, which was easily capable of destroying her as an infant. To prevent this, a powerful fuuinjutsu seal was applied to her shortly after her birth. Because of this, Lady Coal's chakra is very confusing. To reduce needed math and calculations it can just be stated as thus. Even as a long time jounin, Lady coal only has the chakra capacity to hold 4 A ranks of chakra. Anything more than this(Under any circumstances) is immediately siphoned out of her chakra supply at a rate of 1 A rank per post, and absorbed by her Chakra Containment Seal. Because Coal has such expert control over her chakra supply, she can spend a whole post concentrating to squeeze 1 A rank of chakra out of the seal, and back into her chakra network. While concentrating on the seal Coal can not move, attack, or utilize Jutsu. If she does, she looses concentration, and can not harvest chakra that post.

Because her mind is removed from the picture, her body moves on its own to defend herself from incoming attacks. Because of this Coal is able to process information and move 1/10th a second faster than everyone else. There is less of an effect is the body is weak or badly damaged.

No Mind, Defence:
Because Coal practices her Tai Chi so frequently, her body has forever learned each and every movement taught to practice students. The style of martial arts blends mystic forms of deep meditation, into instinctual and repetitive practice movements. The movements in turn mimic the defensive maneuvers a conscious body would go through to block or parry incoming attacks. Because of this, Coal need not analyze an opponent’s attack before it lands, and her body will take the appropriate action all on it’s own to defend itself. Because of this, even when trapped in a Genjutsu, coal’s body will hold its ground and defend itself attacks. Of course, this does nothing to remove Coal’s actual mind from a Genjutsu, and it will not even clue her in that she is in an illusion, it just does not leave her body so helpless on its own.

Description: This jutsu is similiar to Kage Bunshin in that it conjors forth a single physical clone made of shaped chakra; however, instead of being shaped as a clone of the user, the use of Henge no Jutsu ensures that the clone appears in the form of an animal of some sort. This summon follows all other rules for kage bunshin, except as follows: Shadow Summons are not able to use any of the users jutsu, nor are they able to speak a human tongue. Once transformed the clones can not alter their shape. Like other shadow clones, this clone will pop and disappear after any damage is scored on the creature, but unlike other shadow clones the Shadow Summon can not inflict damage on its own. Description: As the name implies, this is a multi summon version of the lesser Kage Kuchiyosi jutsu. As such, all summons from this jutsu follow the rules specific to that jutsu as far as combat abilities go. This means the shadow creatures summoned can not deal physical damage, but are capable of locomotion as it suitable for their creature type. Though this is an S ranked jutsu, it costs 2 S ranks of chakra to cast. The two S ranks of chakra divide and form into a total of 30 small birds, each holding 1 D rank of chakra inside of them, and 1 C ranks worth of chakra spent in aiding the shaping process. Clearly, the best use of this jutsu is scouting out vast areas in a small amount of time. When the clones die, or pop by themselves, the chakra and memory of each bird returns. This jutsu returns only half of the chakra spent to cast it, once all the birds have dispersed.

It’s over all shape is that of a lotus flower with a large and wide open blossom. It is attached to a vine that curls it’s way down along her lower body and left leg. It also travels up over her right shoulder and over her right arm. Both ends of the vine also contain a single lotus blossom, however both are only just beginning to open.

Positive Effects: Eh… This seal stops Lady Coal from turning into a small bomb of lava chakra.
Negative Effects: This seal infuses itself into the wearer’s chakra network and siphons off a huge amount of it. People wearing this seal will be left with anywhere from 50-90% less chakra than they should naturally have access too.
Seal Info: After this seal has been in place for 2 months it has absorbed enough chakra to fully establish itself. After it has been established the seal will take the desired shape, and begin to slowly grow as it absorbs more and more chakra. After time has been spent training with, or learning about, this seal, the wearer is able to learn how to draw chakra that has been absorbed out of the seal. An A rank amount of chakra is able to be absorbed each post, however doing so requires complete concentration on accessing the seal.

Likewise, the same amount of chakra will banish he item back from whence it came. This marker can be placed on any sort of free standing object that is not bolted to the ground. It can not be used on animals.

Seal Info: This seal is fused deeply to the users body and chakra network, and has several simple effects. The first and most important effect of this seal is to be able to draw out natural, or organic based, toxins and poisons from a patient’s body. This seal extends its chakra into the patient’s body and physically draws it to the surface. After the poison has been fully drawn to the surface, the seal next draws the substance into the seal itself, and stores it there. While this is able to cure most poisons, it also acts as a safe storage seal that allows Coal to utilize the cured poisons in unique ways.

Seal Info: This seal functions by slowly seeping chakra into the patient’s chakra network. A brief connection is made between the seal and the patient, and a small exchange of chakra is made. The seal analyzes the chakra quickly, and through it Coal is able to identify almost any sort of ailment. This can be anything from broken bones, poisons, disease, mutations, or damage to the chakra network or inner organs. This seal has no healing effects on its own and is purely a diagnosis tool. This can be used to scan any living plant or animal that is willing to remain motionless for a couple minutes.

Seal Info:After writing out the script for the seal, the user will activate the jutsu. The seal will glow for a moment, and then transform itself into a powerful symbol, which is charged with the user’s chakra. The symbol is full of subtly shifting, non-geometric patterns which the optical lobe can not process. When the brain tries to process the visual information from looking directly at the seal, it will be faced with a visual paradox, and shut down in response. This shutdown is brief, but has several effects. The body will go limp when this happens, causing any items held in the hand to be released and dropped. Furthermore, the legs will cease holding the body up, and the victim of this effect will fall down. The effects of this symbol fade away after only one post, after which the victim is free to resume normal action.

Seal Info: This seal functions by releasing chakra in the exact same manner each time it is used. This seal acts something like a template which molds and disperses the chakra poured into it into the propper form to fuel the Body Flicker Technique, however this flicker will -always- follow the same path when used. Because of this strict limitation, this seal can only be used in one manner, and one manner alone. When chakra is charged into the seal, it releases it all instantly into the legs and feet, and causes the wearer to recieve a huge speed inscrease. While in this state the user can move so quickly they become little more than a blur, much like Shunshin. The unfortuante drawback of this ability is the great speed does little for manueverability. Due to dangers involved with broken ankles and arches in the past, this seal is designed to ONLY allow travel in a straight line. Varrying the amount of chakra can varry the distance traveled, but nothing can be done to change directions. This seal remains only active for a fraction of a second, which is enough to propell someone forward at Shunshin speeds up to 50meters. Again, you can -only- travel in a straight line. No turning, no jumping, no acrobatics. Straight line only. Use with caution as running into something solid at these speeds is very painful.

Seal Info: The effects of this seal are profound, but simple in execution. The seal acts as a tethering station which both emits and recieves a constant stream of chakra that is fed from any other seal matching it's design. When two matching seals are within proximity of each other, the chakra emited by one will be recieved by the other seal. When this link is established the concious thoughts of each individual will be heard as running dialoug in the other person's head. Unless the two minds are in perfect harmony with each other the chaotic feed back associated with two conflicting minds will render both wearers of this seal completely distracted by the second stream of thoughts. Because this chaos happened between even sibblings, close friends, and family members, this seal was thought as a failure for some time.

However, when the wearer of this seal forms a Shadow Clone, the cloned seal is able to link with the original's seal and establish a solid link between the mind of the original and the clone. Because the clone and the original each possess the same mind, the link is perfect. This allows the clone and the original to talk freely, and plan in silence This acts as a form of silent comunication for the group, and it also allows the user to keep tabs on roughly how much chakra the other person contains. While this acts as something of a silent, wireless comunications device it does not display any of the other person's senses. You can not see or hear through the other person, nor can you feel their pain.

This jutsu typically has maximum range of 1 mile, as the distance causes communications to be lost in a sort of "mental static" when forced out so long, however Coal is able to over come the weakness briefly. By expending a C rank amount of chakra and forcing it into the Single Mind seal, Coal is able to increase the range by 1 more mile, but for only a single post. Absolute concentration is required to extend chakra out at these ranges, and the user of this technique can not move, attack, or defend themselves while fully concentrating. This effect lasts only 1 post, but can be concentrated on in the next post to renew the effect. Only the person sending a message needs to concentrate at this distance, as the person recieving the message can continue moving, or attacking, or defending however they please.

Description/Abilities: These robes are woven from the silk of the giant Fire spider, a monster that exists in and near volcanic vents, and thrives in very hot places. The silk is as strong as steel, and provides a good amount of protection from piercing and slashing weapons to her torso. Beyond that, the silk is also extremely heat resist and will not burn. These robes can withstand temperatures well exceeding those requires for melting steel and not even singe. While this is a natural property of the silk and applies to the fabric itself, it does not extend this protection to the wearer. To protect the wearer a fuuinjutsu seal has been applied to ward against flames. This provides a protection from fire for the user which reduces the effectiveness of Fire damage by 1 rank.

History: After a team of talented hunters destroyed a large fire spider, they collected the silk required for the robe’s construction from the large beasts silk glands. The silk was then cured and woven into the robes, which were altered with a minor fire protection fuuinjutsu seal. Lady Coal purchased these robes because they are beautiful, delightfully soft on the skin, and above all; they are able to easily withstand even the largest amounts of heat she can generate internally. It is also handy that Lava will not burn the robes off of her.

Appearance: These robes are soft, fine,and the height of luxury. The materials alone cost as much as a small house, but for those who appreciate the truly finer things in life, this is the perfect outfit. The robes are left their natural fire red color, though strips of silk have been dyed a darker red for use as trim and embellishment. When worn by Lady Coal, the robes cling to her body like a second skin, and only help enhance her beauty and regal exterior.

The first and most powerful of effects is the sash's ability to gather and store a charge of chakra, which is easily accessible to the person wearing this sash. As a result, this sash increases the wearers over all chakra capacity by 1 S rank of chakra. The seal storing this chakra in a powerful one, and no outside source is able to drain this chakra through the use of jutsu, or other sorts of techniques. The sash will only willingly give its chakra to the person who is wearing it, and only slowly at that. Absorbing the chakra requires no concentration at all, and can happen as instinct when accessing chakra for a jutsu. History: This is an old item that was both tailored and enchanted by the monks of the Open Lotus monastery. This is only one of many such sashes created by the wise monks, though all have differing abilities. The Sash of Victory is the prize for the champion of the temple's traditional games, which are something like an Olympic test of the numerous skills taught in the monastery. Coal participated in these games when she was 18, and managed to become the champion after a hard fought competition. She still wears the sash every day, though few know of its true championship like meaning.

Appearance: This sash seems quite simple from any distance. It's little more than about ten feet of soft red silk which has been carefully woven and fringed in a warm orange trim. It's a single color sash and has no obvious decorations, but the inside of the soft red material has been dyed with an endless string of interconnected seals and glyphs. To those who can see Chakra, the entire thing glows with power, unless its chakra supply has been diminished.

Description/Abilities: This is a small strip of fabric about three inches wide and it has two simple pockets sewn into it. The pockets are much smaller than most other ninja pouches, so this pouch can not hold weapons such as Kunai or Shuriken, or really any other sort of bladed weapons which could easily tear the fabric it’s constructed from. Instead the pockets hold a small supply of 10 or so smoke pellets in one pocket, and five small flash bombs in the other. When strapped to the arm it fits nice and secure and runs no risk of falling off. Furthermore, Coal also keeps two stacks of ten notes tucked under the band for quick access. Ten of them are
exploding note, while ten of them are Multi Purpose Bonding notes.

History: Coal has never been much for accessorizing, and has always kept a minimalistic approach to her wardrobe. This ninja pouch is small, but because she’s long shunned the use of metal weapons it holds just about everything she needs. She decided to keep it small in size so that it could be worn beneath the sleeve on her left arm, and because of its design is fits snug and without seeming bulky. This allows it to remain hidden away, so she can draw the items from seemingly just beneath her sleeve.

Appearance: This is a small strip of sturdy black cloth with two small pockets sewn into it. Across the outside of the band it has a small steel plate that’s about four inches long and two inches wide. The plate is riveted securely to the fabric and bent to match the curve of Coal’s arm. The spiral Leaf Village crest is engraved on the surface, and this also functions as Coal’s Headband.. even if it is usually hidden.

Description: Coal was born with an unthinkably large chakra supply, which was easily capable of destroying her as an infant. To prevent this, a powerful fuuinjutsu seal was applied to her shortly after her birth. Because of this, Lady Coal's chakra is very confusing. To reduce needed math and calculations it can just be stated as thus. Even as a long time jounin, Lady coal only has the chakra capacity to hold 4 A ranks of chakra. Anything more than this(Under any circumstances) is immediately siphoned out of her chakra supply at a rate of 1 A rank per post, and absorbed by her Chakra Containment Seal. Because Coal has such expert control over her chakra supply, she can spend a whole post concentrating to squeeze 1 A rank of chakra out of the seal, and back into her chakra network. While concentrating on the seal Coal can not move, attack, or utilize Jutsu. If she does, she looses concentration, and can not harvest chakra that post.
